“There are two types of homes out there: there are homes that have termites and there are homes that are going to get termites.”
Termites living outside in nature are considered beneficial, as they’re responsible for helping speed up the process of breaking down decaying trees and other organic matter. Termites become problematic, however, when they find their way inside homes and commercial buildings to feed on structural wood. Termites enter silently into homes and can work for months, or even years before damage is discovered. Termite infestations can cause unimaginable damage to your home or business if left unattended. Termite damage is not something that is typically covered by insurance companies, because their damage is not something that happens overnight, and is often viewed as something that can be prevented with proper care. We recommend regular termite inspections to avoid or head off any structural damage. If we do find termites, we offer termite control to our Southern California community.
Our termite technicians are licensed with the California Structural Pest Control Board. In addition to the strict vetting of this licensure, our technicians receive ongoing training by industry professionals and certified entomologists. When they come to your home or business they will inspect both the interior and exterior, including every visible and accessible area. Homeowners can often identify areas of concern on the interior, but the most common termite infestations are generally where homeowners are least likely to look. We inspect these areas including attics and crawl spaces to identify signs of termite activity, dry rot, moisture damage, leaks, fungus, and other signs of wood-destroying organisms. A comprehensive written report is prepared with a diagram of the structure, along with detailed findings and recommendations. This report is typically delivered by the end of the next business day along with an estimate for repairs, corrections, or treatments.
Our termite technicians will determine the type of wood-destroying organism your home or business is infested with. The most common termites in Southern California are either drywood or subterranean termites. Subterranean colonies nest underground and enter homes and wooden structures from the soil. The drywood termites live in much smaller colonies and work at a much slower rate than subterranean termites. They do not require contact with the soil to invade wooden structures. Drywood termites are extremely efficient, leaving almost nothing behind after they finish feeding on pieces of wood. Termites aren’t the only wood pest here in Southern California; powder post beetles, fungi, dry rot, and white rot are also prevalent. As part of our inspection, we will be looking for signs not easily identified by homeowners. Evidence of termites in a home is often found as piles of wings in window sills or in spider webs. These wings demonstrate swarming behavior; the termite colony is growing in size and splitting off to create new termite colonies. We generally find that subterranean colonies swarm in the Spring through early Summer and drywood colonies swarm in the late Summer through Fall. We frequently identify drywood termite colonies by their fecal droppings; which look like reddish-brown sawdust pellets and subterranean colonies by their tell-tale mud tubes. We can also determine the type of colony based on the wings of the swarmers and the type of damage done to the wood. Our technician will identify the species and then make treatment recommendations.
Our technicians will customize a treatment plan based on the type of termites found and the extent of the damage and infestation. Some of the options we may recommend include: Local drywood treatment, Whole house fumigation, Local subterranean treatment, Whole house subterranean treatment, Wood replacement & repair, Pre-treatments, and Escrow Inspections.
